Plus sides of chemo….yes, I may end up bald but that means all over, right?!?
12 days until I start. But who’s counting
Still in Amman, still smitten, still working like mad, still wondering about the next phase of my life, still have cancer and still living with it.
Sounds like not only are you livin’, but rockin’ 🙂 xxx

So, I’ve been speaking to a friend who has been through pretty virulent breast cancer (twice) and is still as strong and beautiful as ever. Here are some suggestions she has (bearing in mind, of course, as you know better than anyone, that no two people experience the same things): Get your wig now, before you start losing hair. It’s easier to gauge what will suit you (unless, of course, you go for the purple/yellow/lime green, in which case, it doesn’t really matter)! One of the things she did when her hair started falling out was to go straight to shaving it off – she said it helped psychologically; I don’t know that you’re a manicure/pedicure kind of person (we all change), but don’t do it in the middle of the chemo cycle, when your white blood cells are down (they go down further with each round) making you much more susceptible to infection. Also in that “down” cycle, you may feel pretty low, so be careful going out and about, because of the weakness of your immune system; if you get cracked lips, the miracle lotion is called Aquaphor Baby Care and it will be more helpful than anything else (if you can’t get it there, I can have some shipped to you); you may need to have some anti-nausea medicine on hand, even if you don’t actually take it, it’s good to know it’s there – talk to your doc about what would work. Also have a good heartburn medicine to hand. She said after what she experienced, she said she would never complain about “normal” heartburn again. But of course, she absolutely does…LOL! She said just do what you need to do for you, no matter what. She reminds me of you a little (except I don’t love her quite as much): brave, resolute, determined, humorous, honest. And I know the whole bikini waxing thing is behind you now (so to speak), and that you most probably know quite a lot more than what I wrote about above, but she is a wonderful source of info (for my ignorant self) and always ready to share her own experience, strength and hope. xxxx

Thank you and to your friend :-). Apparently there is a specific chemo that causes the heartburn which I am not having…so lets see. I SO don’t do nausea, so plan to have meds around me constantly…a tip from a friend was to take them before I feel sick and keep taking them for a while – works for me! And yes, I do get manicures and pedicures – in fact, have bright pink toes currently 🙂 – so a very useful tip.

BTW the first and last time I had a bikini wax (never again), my skin bruised in such a fashion that I looked like I was becoming reptilian…totally the opposite effect of what I was looking for, you can imagine. Lasted for at least a week.

so: Brazilian bikini, unpolished nails, bouncy locks and glossy lips. I can picture it. Just Sonia with Glamorous Cancer!
And, bikini wax: the thought is about as appealing as planning a ‘nail pull’.
