Was out on Saturday night to celebrate The Man’s birthday and my left boob started hurting a lot. Obviously didn’t get into it at the time…then through the night it was getting worse – seriously swollen, red, hot (boob, not me, sadly) and bloody painful.
Called the Marsden Sunday lunchtime as it was getting worse, they weirdly don’t have an emergency part to them, so went to a private place to be seen. Which had a stunningly stupid doctor. I was seen by a nurse, who did the usual, then took down all the details of what was wrong: the doc clearly didn’t bother to read that so asked me the same so I gave pretty short answers. Then examined my breast which looked like a fucking beacon at this point, double the size of the other one, plus of course the operation scar is still very visible. Finishes the exam and asks me which breast I had the cancer in. The Man looks at me, I think ready to restrain me in case I was going to punch her…..fortunately for her I was in too much pain at that point so just stared at her.
She said I had to be admitted, and while the hospital is a lovely one (apart from her, clearly) I wanted to go the Marsden. So called them back, they sorted out an admission for me and off we trotted there. Well, drove, with me clutching my boob. I really have never felt my breasts as much in my life as over the last year…pre cancer diagnosis feeling the lumps, during cancer treatment and now, just as I thought the self touching was over, here I am again.
Did I mention I hate hospitals? Yes, I fully appreciate the irony given how much time I have spent in them this past year. I particularly hate being admitted into hospitals, which luckily in my life has been very rare But here I am now – albeit in a private room which is kind of like an NHS upgrade – a bit like a Holiday Inn attempting to upgrade to a Hilton and not even quite making the Double Tree.
Waiting currently to see a Registrar, but I think its likely I’ll be in until tomorrow at least….will update later on what s/he says plus some of the ridiculously funny/odd things that have happened..getting sleepy now.
Holding you in the light (was going to say holding you and your boob in the light but it didn’t seem quite the right wording :))
